The number of women getting tummy tucks has grown 85% from 2000 to 2010, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. However, sometimes, the procedure is not about just trying to recapture a youthful appearance. This patient had a complicated delivery of twins 19 years ago, leaving her with a disfigured abdomen. She struggled with low self-esteem for nearly two decades before deciding to talk with me about the appearance of her abdomen. She was extremely self-conscious about how she looked in clothing and would not wear anything snug around her mid-section for fear that others would notice the irregular contour and scarring of her tummy. In consultation, I advised her that a tummy tuck procedure would be the best way to remove the excess skin, revise the scars, and reconstruct her belly button.
