Feel Comfortable In Your Body

Often, those with large, heavy breasts experience symptoms such as neck and back pain, difficulty exercising, painful bra strap marks, and difficulty finding clothing that fits properly. The best way to alleviate these symptoms for many women is breast reduction surgery. In addition to the physical benefits, breast reduction surgery in Austin with Dr. Rocco Piazza can benefit patients emotionally by improving their confidence and decreasing their self-consciousness.

Your Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction surgery is performed in a fully accredited hospital surgery center near our practice, and is performed as an outpatient procedure. In general, breast reduction patients can expect the procedure to take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the amount of reduction necessary.

After studying and training under Dr. Dennis Hammond, Dr. Piazza has adopted the SPAIR breast reduction technique.  This innovative technique allows for a shorter scar, and improves the overall breast appearance. With this method, tissue is removed from around the nipple and the areola in a semi-circular fashion.

The breast is then reshaped in a manner that maintains the natural curves running from the outer portion of the breast over to the inner chest wall. Dr. Piazza has found that this method of breast reduction provides the most aesthetically pleasing shape as well as decreased scarring.

Breast Reduction Results

After your breast reduction, you may experience swelling and soreness, but this will subside over the next few days to weeks. You will only wear a supportive bra to help maintain your new breast shape. In general, normal, everyday activities can be resumed about a week after the procedure, and most women return to work after 7 to 10 days. Carefully following postoperative instructions may help to reduce your recovery time.

Short-Scar Breast Reduction Lift Surgery at a Glance

At The Piazza Center, we believe that beautiful cosmetic surgery results are enhanced by leading a healthy lifestyle. Our aim is to help you achieve your cosmetic goals and desires. If you would like to find out more about breast reduction, you can request an in-person or virtual consultation.

Goal

To enhance the appearance of the breast by decreasing the width, lifting the position of the nipple, and reducing the areola diameter.

Procedure

The breast is reshaped using the vertical style mastopexy or short-scar breast lift technique to optimize the position of the nipple, reduce the size of the areola and remove unwanted saggy tissue on the bottom and sides of the breast.

Anesthesia

General anesthesia

Procedure length

2.5 hours

Aftercare

There will be small white Steri-Strips™ on the breast incisions. The patient will be placed in a soft bra. There are no drains for this procedure. Dr. Piazza does advise that patients apply ice to the breasts, and he encourages his patients to shower on the first day after surgery.

Recovery

During the first few days after surgery, the patient will experience some breast discomfort and pressure that may be addressed with medications that control pain and reduce inflammation. Most patients transition to acetaminophen and ibuprofen within the first few days following the procedure. Most patients will return to work 1 week after the procedure and be back to full activities without restrictions after 6 weeks. Bruising around the breast in the areas where the lift or fat transfer was performed will usually resolve in 2 weeks.

Timeline

  1. Surgery
  2. Day 5 to 7: Steri-Strip removal
  3. Day 7 to 10: Return to work and social activities
  4. 6 weeks: 80% healed
  5. 3 months: 100% healed

Will I be able to breastfeed after a breast reduction?

Many of my breast reduction patients are concerned with breastfeeding after their procedure. It is likely that you will be able to breastfeed normally, as the nipple is not completely removed from the breast; therefore, the nerves and ducts are kept intact. This can be discussed in more detail during your consultation.

Do you use liposuction to reduce the size of the breasts?

Not typically. While liposuction can be used to reduce the size of the breasts, I prefer to use the SPAIR technique, which allows me to reduce the breasts in a way that maintains the beautiful curves and shape of the breast. This technique also allows me to use smaller incisions than other breast reduction techniques. This, in turn, creates a more aesthetically pleasing breast appearance than other, more traditional breast reduction methods.

What are the potential risks and complications associated with breast reduction?

Potential risks and complications of breast reduction surgery include infection, bleeding, changes in nipple sensation, and scarring. However, these risks are typically low, and most patients experience successful outcomes with proper care and follow-up.

Can I combine my breast reduction with other procedures?

Yes, breast reduction can be combined with other procedures like breast augmentation to achieve a balanced and desired breast size and shape. This combination can address both the reduction of overly large breasts and the enhancement of smaller or deflated breasts, providing comprehensive results tailored to individual needs.
