Gynecomastia Surgery Overview

Feel Good in Your Body

Are you a guy who avoids beaches and pool parties because of excess breast tissue? You may have a treatable condition called gynecomastia, and you are not alone. At The Piazza Center in Austin, Texas, practice founder Dr. Rocco Piazza can help get rid of this embarrassing condition, leaving you with a sculpted, masculine chest and virtually no signs of surgery.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a benign condition where boys and men have the appearance of ‘male breasts’ caused by the presence of swollen breast tissue or fat. The breasts often protrude and can be seen through shirts. This condition can bring about body shame and a reluctance to be seen shirtless. For boys and teens, teasing can become an issue.

Unfortunately, gynecomastia is completely impervious to diet and exercise, and in some cases can become worse with certain pectoral exercises. Dr. Piazza understands just how important it is for men and boys to feel confident in their bodies and has helped countless male patients who have suffered from this condition Live Confidently.

What Happens During Gynecomastia Surgery?

Dr. Piazza conducts surgery to correct gynecomastia at INSPIRE Surgery Centre, an Austin-based exclusive outpatient surgery facility. After the patient is anesthetized by our dedicated anesthesiologist Dr. Cady, D.O., Dr. Piazza creates tiny incisions to remove unnecessary glandular and fatty tissue from the area.

Next, he carefully contours the chest so it has a more masculine, fit appearance. Finally, the small incisions are meticulously closed, completing the procedure. Most gynecomastia surgeries require about 1-2 hours.

The Recovery Process

Most men tolerate the recovery from gynecomastia surgery very well, finding it to be smooth and uneventful. Dr. Piazza gives each patient a customized recovery plan that suits their needs and lifestyle. In general, he recommends patients plan to take 1-2 weeks off. Patients should wear a compression garment as they recover, but this is easily camouflaged under clothes.

Visits to the gym or any vigorous exercise are to be avoided until cleared by Dr. Piazza. During  follow-up visits with Dr. Piazza, he will monitor you to ensure healing is going according to plan. Dr. Piazza continues to track results even after healing has concluded to ensure patient satisfaction.

Candidacy for Gynecomastia Surgery

While it's a common condition affecting men of all ages, gynecomastia can cause significant distress and self-consciousness. Understanding whether you're a candidate for gynecomastia surgery starts with recognizing the signs and symptoms. If you identify with one or more of these signs, you may be a candidate for gynecomastia surgery.

Enlarged Breasts

One of the primary indicators of gynecomastia is the enlargement of one or both breasts, often resulting in a more feminine or disproportionate chest appearance.

Excess Breast Tissue

Gynecomastia can lead to the accumulation of excess glandular tissue beneath the nipple-areolar complex, causing the breasts to appear swollen or puffy.

Nipple Changes

Men with gynecomastia may notice changes in the appearance of their nipples, such as enlargement or protrusion, due to the underlying breast tissue growth.

Tenderness or Discomfort

Some individuals with gynecomastia experience tenderness, pain, or discomfort in the breast area, especially when touched.

Psychological Impact

Beyond the physical symptoms, gynecomastia can have a profound psychological impact, leading to embarrassment, low self-esteem, and avoidance of certain social situations.

Consulting with a qualified plastic surgeon is the next step in determining the most appropriate treatment plan for your unique needs and goals. Entrust in Dr. Rocco Piazza to lead you down the path of a more confident, comfortable body.

How Much Does Gynecomastia Cost?

The cost of gynecomastia surgery can vary based on several factors, including the complexity of the procedure, the time taken to perform the procedure, and any additional fees associated with anesthesia, facility usage, and post-operative care.

On average, our patients can expect to pay between $6,000 to $8,000 for gynecomastia surgery. However, it's essential to note that this is a rough estimate, and the actual cost may fall outside of this range, depending on individual circumstances.

What causes gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, certain medications, underlying medical conditions, genetics, and lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise habits. Hormonal fluctuations, particularly an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone levels, are commonly associated with the development of gynecomastia.

Is gynecomastia surgery safe?

Yes, gynecomastia surgery is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon. Like any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications, which will be discussed with you during your consultation. By choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon and following pre- and post-operative instructions diligently, you can minimize these risks and achieve optimal results.

Will gynecomastia surgery leave scars?

Gynecomastia surgery typically involves making incisions around the areola or in the natural creases of the chest to remove excess glandular tissue and fat and reshape the chest contours. While some scarring is inevitable, incisions are strategically placed to minimize visibility.
